What is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic Dentistry refers to dental care that considers the health of your whole body and not just that of your mouth. Holistic dentists at our Brisbane CBD practice assume a comprehensive role in the prevention and treatment of your dental problems. Instead of focusing just on your teeth and gums, we take into account your diet, life-style, stress levels and exercise routines as factors that directly or indirectly influence your dental health. Holistic Dentistry is also known by other names, such as biological dentistry or alternative dentistry.

At Healthy Dentistry, our holistic dentists provide a calm and restful environment so that you may sit back and relax while our friendly dentists and staff guide you along every step of your preventative care program or treatment procedure. True to our holistic philosophy, we look after every aspect of your experience with us.

Benefits of Holistic Dentistry

The term ‘holistic’ is derived form a Greek word that means ‘relating to the whole’. Holistic Dentistry represents the overarching role of oral care and its contributions toward the patient’s overall health and wellbeing, and vice versa.

The best way to appreciate the need for holistic dentistry is to examine its benefits and advantages over conventional dentistry.

Here are some of the many benefits you can expect from our highly experienced holistic team at Healthy Dentistry:

Comprehensive assessments

In our patient assessments, we consider all the different factors that potentially contribute to a patient’s dental woes including: imbalances in posture, improper jaw relationships, malocclusions, etc. Other highly plausible yet seldom detected causes of dental ailments are also taken into consideration: occupational hazards, diet issues, emotional stress, lack of sleep or exercise, toxic chemicals, etc. As can be seen, your oral health is a true reflection of your overall health, body, mind and soul.

Healthy Dentistry use highly detailed assessments leave nothing to chance, simply because you can never be too careful with health matters – even those that begin innocuously as a toothache. That’s why we use cutting edge diagnostic equipment like low-exposure x-rays and DIAGNOcam imaging. These technological tools not only raise the level of diagnostic capability, they dramatically improve the safety of our patients and staff.

Say ‘no’ to toxic materials

As you may already know, there is an increasing prevalence of toxic materials found in the food we consume, the things we use and even the very environment in which we live. More people are becoming aware of toxic substances like fluoride and mercury found in dental materials and products. They may appear insignificant at the onset, but prolonged use will accumulate harmful toxic materials in the body which may have dire consequences.

You’ll be glad to know that Healthy Dentistry is a mercury-free dental practice.

If you had fillings placed some time ago, chances are, they may be silver amalgam fillings that contain 50% mercury. Our practice offers the safe removal of amalgam fillings as a preventative measure – to reduce the patient’s long-term exposure to neurotoxic mercury vapour.

We utilise specialised tools such as the IQAir Dental Pro mercury air filter and Dental HD FlexVac mobile air cleaning system to minimise the toxic mercury vapours released from amalgams during the procedures. Read more about the safe dental materials we use here at Healthy Dentistry.

Metal-free materials and treatments

We offer metal-free components for all fillings, crowns, orthodontic and dental implant treatments.

Dental implants promise one of the most natural means of replacing your teeth. The implants are usually small posts made of titanium that are lodged into the jawbones that serve as the anchors for your prosthetic teeth.

At Healthy Dentistry, we offer the metal-free ceramic version of the implants that are safe and biocompatible. The metal-free component avoids the immunosuppression of titanium and the electrical battery effect of metals. To the patient, the implant supported prosthetic teeth looks, feels and functions like natural teeth.

Our orthodontic patients also benefit from our use of metal-free braces. Unlike traditional metal braces comprising wires and brackets, we use clear, plastic braces which are healthier and do not attract unwanted attention to your teeth or the fact that you are undergoing the teeth straightening procedure.

More than just aesthetic improvements, the removable clear braces give wearers the freedom to brush their teeth and eat as they normally would. Also, they do not trap food particles the way metal braces tend to – in the crevices between the wires and the teeth. – so the chance of decay is reduced.

Holistic Dentistry FAQs

  • What is the difference between a holistic dentist and conventional dentist?

The biggest difference between a holistic dentist and a regular dentist is that practitioners of holistic dentistry believe that the mouth is connected is to the rest of the body and that the body’s health affects oral health, and health of the mouth affects the whole body. . Holistic dentistry covers an awareness of the physical, mental and emotional well being of the entire person. Holistic dentists view the patient’s teeth, gums and oral health as being part of a bigger picture, a reflection of a person’s overall health.

Holistic dentists do not simply look at isolated symptoms pertaining to your oral cavity but also the links between them and your physical health, daily habits, diet and stress levels. Compared to traditional dentists, they generally place more emphasis on nutrition and decayprevention as well as education. A holistic dentist will ask questions to learn more about your personal lifestyle, including your diet and eating habits, exercising habits, stress factors as well as any chronic health concerns you may have.

When it comes to treatment approach, the holistic dentist will favour the use of natural ingredients, materials and methods. At Healthy Dentistry, we do not use potentially dangerous substances like mercury and fluoride but rather, biocompatible and metal-free materials. We also use state-of-the art digital x-rays to improve the safety of our patients and staff. These low-exposure digital diagnostic tools provide a radiation dose which is less than one-eighth of traditional film x-rays.

Your teeth and gums are extremely important because they act as a barometer of your overall health. That is why at Healthy Dentistry, we care about the mind, body and spirit of our patients, and not just their teeth.

  • Should I remove my amalgam fillings?

The use of mercury amalgam fillings is highly controversial because they expose patients to small but potentially dangerous doses of mercury every day. Holistic dentists are concerned about the use of this toxic element in the mouth – more than 50% of an amalgam filling is made up of mercury in weight terms. Due to growing awareness of the negative effects of mercury poisoning, more and more people are requesting to have their amalgam fillings removed and replaced by alternative materials like porcelain, composite resins and Ormocers.

Besides posing a potential health risk, mercury fillings are known to expand as they age. Due to the corrosion of the metal component, the slowly expanding amalgam can crack your tooth without you feeling anything! For many patients this will mean they risk losing their tooth. This happens in about 2 out of 10 cases. If the tooth splits into the nerve area, often the only solution is to have a root canal treatment and a strengthening cap or crown. If the tooth splits down the middle, there is no option except extraction. Neither of these is a good outcome, so please let the team at Healthy Dentistry know if you have any concerns about cracked teeth, and an assessment can be done to see if you are at risk.

Healthy Dentistry offers a safe removal process for your old amalgams and we help to replace them with more natural and healthy alternatives.

  • Why should I get my mercury fillings removed by a holistic dentist?

A holistic dentist is well equipped to administer a safe and hygienic procedure for mercury filling removal. While it may be true that any dental office can remove old silver/mercury fillings, a natural dentist employs additional protective tools and techniques to avoid any toxic exposure to mercury.

At Healthy Dentistry, our primary goal for the removal process is to protect the patient and the entire office from mercury exposure. We utilize protective barriers, mercury air filters and air cleaning systems – not commonly found in most clinics – that are beneficial to everyone’s health and safety.

  • Why is metal-free dentistry the healthier choice?

Non-metal fillings and crowns, such as porcelain or composite do not leach potentially harmful metals into the mouth and into our bodies. The metal component in traditional dental restorations is susceptible to shrinkage and expansion when it comes into contact with the hot and cold foods the patient consumes. This results in constant movement that can weaken the original structure of the tooth. Our team will assess your teeth to determine whether they are at risk.

At Healthy Dentistry, we use biocompatible dental materials that are non-reactive and closest to natural as possible. Whether for crowns, bridges, implants or fillings, these modern restorative materials feel and look so natural that you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart from your real teeth.
