Treatment and prevention of gum disease using natural methods

Periodontal disease, commonly known as “gum disease”, is a serious bacterial infection of the gums, jawbone and connective tissue. Serious inflammation of gum pockets can not only have serious consequences such as tooth loss, but also modern medical research suggests a link to heart attack, premature birth and underweight babies.

As this is a complex problem requiring active patient involvement to reverse, Dr. Marhfour's team places a strong emphasis on patient education. A dental assessment can reverse the effects of existing gum disease by first identifying the catalyst. The overwhelming presence of multiplying bacteria and excessive tartar is often the result of a person not knowing how to take care of their teeth properly, or not attending frequently enough and could also reflect a weakened immune system.

Establishing an effective dental care regime is your best prevention against gum disease. Dr. Marhfour recommends taking the following steps:

Daily cleaning: Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes, after each meal is even better. Do not forget to remove left-behind food with dental floss, pikster style interdental brushes, or an oral irrigator. Some find scraping the tongue beneficial to reduce the mouth’s overall bacteria load. Toothbrushes should also be replaced every three months, after illness or when bristles show signs of wear to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Professional care: Visiting Healthy Dentistry every six months for a dental assessment is essential. A professional clean will remove plaque and tartar around your gum line that at-home cleaning cannot address. An oral evaluation will monitor your dental health and can detect potential or existing problems in their early stages before they escalate into more serious complications.

Immune support: Following a healthy diet of natural foods rich in Vit B, Vit C, Vit D, calcium, omega-3 (from fish), Coenzyme Q-10, regular exercise and taking supplements (Vit B, Vit C, Vit D, calcium, omega-3, Coenzyme Q-10 ) where diet is insufficient, supports the immune system. A stronger immune system provides a greater defence against bacteria infecting your gums.

Dr Marhfour's personal view is that there may be an immune system deficiency in people at higher risk of periodontal gum disease which may reflect an underlying mal-absorption problem. Rather than taking a “pot luck” approach in trying supplements it is often beneficial to have the whole system assessed by a natural doctor experienced in nutritional medicine. If you are not currently under the care of a natural doctor and are interested in this, please let Dr. Marhfour's team know and they will work with you to find a health practitioner you can consult. While it is best to have a diet designed to suit a person’s unique needs, a good resource to learn more about healthy diet is:

If Dr. Marhfour and herteam determine you have or are at risk of periodontal disease, they have a specialized protocol to assist you. In addition to a full periodontal assessment by one of our experienced oral health therapists, where the severity of your gum disease will be measured, a number of natural techniques are used to help beat this invasive disease.

OraMD or Tooth and Gums, which are all both natural toothpaste, mouthwash and breath fresheners may be recommended as part of your care. They are potent bacteria fighters that are anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory with powerful plaque fighters eliminating the need for chemical laden toothpaste alternatives. Their precise formulation of 100% pure botanical oils is designed to kill the bad bacteria that are ravaging your gums.

As part of the Oral Health Therapist’s treatment to remove any built up scale and calculus on your teeth (the home of the bacteria that cause gum disease), PerioRefresh may be used. This innovative natural technique utilizes citric acid, commonly found in many fresh fruits, to help clean off build ups of scale and plaque and prevent their recurrence. In addition studies show PerioRefresh can also assist in reforming some of the lost gum tissues, and important step in stopping this disease.
